I am very sad to have to report that David Monk finally passed away yesterday (19th June) at the age of 94.
David will be well known to many of my fishing friends and pupils as he was a regular at Upper Caberston and my Murthly Castle Scottish salmon courses and came on many of my overseas trips.
I first met David back in 1994 and over the years we became good friends. A mild mannered true gentleman, I was astonished after knowing him for quite some time, when he opened up and told me he had been at Arnhem, after piloting a glider containing nothing but fuel needed for the promised tank advance of the main army. You would never have known otherwise.
His determination and humour in his advancing years also proved an inspiration to me and many others. It was just last year he caught the first trout of our season here at the lakes and the year before that that he hooked and landed a 20lb spring salmon from the banks of the Tay at 92 all on his own!
I and I am sure many others will miss him.
