Diving in Egypt

A bit off topic I know, but many of my fishers also like Scuba diving and you might be interested by my recent trip to Egypt with my kids.

I wanted to get away from the tourist traps, avoid the crowds and get Rory and Sasha taught to dive in the comfort and safety of a small group. So I took a bit of a punt this year and chose a destination and operator straight off the internet. The place, Dahab. The resort Dive-Urge.

It takes a fair bit to really impress me, but these guys did. A bit nervous of the politics and somewhat daunted by a strange place and very different culture, our holiday was absolutely made by the charming family and staff that run this small resort on the outskirts of Dahab, a fairly typical Egyptian coastal small town.

They were all incredibly welcoming, attentive and absolutely nothing was too much trouble. The dive operation is beautifully run, the accommodation clean and very comfortable and the diving, simply stunning. Their Food-Urge restaurant, which we voluntarily opted to eat at whilst staying, was also very good too, hitting a good balance between offering the English teenagers staple diet of a good Burger or Pizza (well ok, for me too occasionally!) and giving us a chance to sample real Egyptian food. Absolute musts during your stay are Dive-Urge’s Camel and Boat safari days – great fun.

The test of a good holiday is that you genuinely don’t want to leave and we didn’t. Both my kids qualified and we all genuinely loved every minute of it. If you are interested in going look these guys up on the web at www.dive-urge.com and get in touch with Lynne Helal-Gillis.
